'UNPRECEDENTED' $37-M PROJECT FOR CHILLIWACK
BY JENNIFER FEINBERG - THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS
NOVEMBER 9 , 2007
Funding for the Evans Road Connector is expected to be announced this morning at city hall — a project that could trigger “large-format” commercial development, and possibly a hotel/casino and more to be built on Squiala First Nation land.
The long-awaited connector project will link both sides of Chilliwack with a new overpass and interchange, reducing traffic congestion at nearby interchanges. But it’s more than a road. Mayor Clint Hames has described the estimated $37.6 million infrastructure project as “unpredecented” in scope, and predicted it could significantly spur on development of the area north of the highway.
City and Squiala officials signed a draft plan months ago, but the parties had been awaiting approval of the final leasing documents from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada before an announcement could be made about funding from the Municipal/Rural Infrastructure program.
Today’s announcement will feature INAC Minister Chuck Strahl, local MLAs, city officials and Squiala chief Sam Jimmie.
